The Virginia Master Naturalist program typically doesn't focus much on solid waste, recycling, and compost issues, but these topics are certainly relevant to conservation of natural resources. Rose Brown (at right), Rivanna Master Naturalist, challenged herself to make 2009 a zero garbage year. She produced only 1/2 pound of garbage (not including recyclables and compostables) for the whole year. It all fits in a bag about the size of a bathroom trash can. In the spirit of learning and sharing, Rose blogged about her experience at http://zerogarbagechallenge.info/, and she's also running a workshop relating to her zero garbage experience on February 6 in Charlottesville. Check out her blog to register for the workshop, to see her 1/2 pound of garbage, and to get ideas on how to reduce your own garbage.
